Notes

[NI001] William Wyles, born December 18, 1906 in Mansfield, Lancaster Co, PA, said that: "John Wiles, his grandfather, and Elizabeth Deringer were divorced around the late 1880's. The five children were put into a Catholic orphanage in Cleveland, OH area. The children's names were misspelled as WYLES at the orphanage. Family legend has his grandfather, John Wiles, was a trainer or sulky for the famous pacer, Dan Patch."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exact birthdays for John Wiles and all his children left to us by William1906's wife, Margaret Wyles, in a typewritten paper.
This typewritten paper also included: John's ex-wife, Elizabeth Deringer, her new husband and her 5 Deringer children. Origin of said typewritten paper is unknown, although some things on it has been verified through copies of records held in the Wyandot Co, OH courthouse. We believe these facts were also obtained by William1878 and his daughter, Lizzie, sometime in the 1930's on a trip to western Ohio.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Discrepancy with John's birthday: The 1880 Census has the "Age at last birthday prior to June 1, 1880" listed as 29. This would put his birthday sometime after June 1, 1850. The typewritten papers left us have his birthday listed as January 1, 1850 which should have put his age at 30 for this 1880 Census?

There's a good plat map of Jackson Twp. I didn't see John Wiles on the map,
but I found a J.W. Wiles listed in the 1877 directory in Jackson Twp. The
directory is a "list of tax-payers, real and personal." I'm not sure if that
means he necessarily owned land.

Could possibly be John, since no one seems to know where this guy came from or where he went to?

[NI003] William Wyles, born December 18, 1906 in Mansfield, Lancaster Co, PA, left papers through his wife, Margaret, giving us John and Elizabeth's birhtdates, but no locations. William1906 said Elizabeth's birthday was December 6, 1857 which is not what the LSD Church records have? William1906 also left us the names of the five children and their birthdays, also with no locations. (I found Elizabeth1882 Wiles' birth records in the LSD church which confirm what William1906 told us about her birthday.) William1906 also said, "That his father and uncles/aunts names were changed by the orphanage from WILES to WYLES."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elaine Wyles, daughter of William1906, remembers: "Her Grandfather William, her Father William and her Mother Margaret traveled to somewhere near Columbus, OH around 1940ish to see Elizabeth, William1878's mother. She lived in a house with a lot of people. William's mother was not happy to see him and he was very upset." She also remembers, "Everyone saying that only the three boys were put in the orphanage. The three boys tried to run away but the youngest, Issac, couldn't get over the fence and he had to stay there."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ben Wyles, John Jacob's son, remembers: "That Elizabeth Stoneburner came and lived with them when he was about 5 years old around 1930. He said that his dad went to her funeral sometime about 1930 or 1931 in Toledo. John1850 died in CA sometime before his grandmother died in 1930's. John1880 died in 1949 and his wife, Anna, died in 1964. His father, John, and his Uncle Billy, William1878, ran away from the orphanage train (that was on its way to Louisville, OH) at the Canton, OH station and ran to the first light they saw. This was the Frank farm up on the hill near the present location of Stark State Technical College on Frank Road. The boys changed their own names themselves so the orphanage wouldn't find them. John and William signed a contract with the Frank family to work for them until they were 20 years old in exchange for room, board and education."

[NI004] We have the birth record from the Wyandot Co, OH records for William.
William left the orphanage when he was 10 or 11 years old and drove a lady to the city of Mansfield, PA (Tioga County, PA).
He was married when he was 18 and Alice was 16.
He died at age 90.
His obit lists him as a farmer and resident of Lancaster Co, PA since 1923.
Some family stories remembered by Nancy Wyles as being told by William1878 have Alice, his wife, being 1/2 Wyandot Indian and that her mother was a full blooded Wyandot Indian. Other family stories have William1878's mother named Sus(z)an(ne) Crow(foot), a full blooded Wyandot Indian, per Caroline Pike, GGGranddaughter of William Wyles. Still searching for information on both of these. (I am currently inclined to believe that it was William1878's grandmother, Miranda Crofutt/Crawford Deringer, who was the indian in the family.)

Lived in several areas in this chronological order, per Nancy Virginia Wyles, his Granddaughter:
1) Had house in Mountains in town of Mansfield, PA (Tioga County, PA) in 1906, since Mansfield is where William (1906) was born.
2) Then big farmhouse on the Conestoga River.
3) Big farm at Holtwood. It is now a Dam and underwater.
4) Strasburg, PA
5) Quarryville sometime after 1960 because Nancy Wyles, his granddaughter, remembers going there to visit and them walking down the street to the bowling alley.

[NI008] Hypothysis: This is most likely the "Issac Clarence Wyles" that William1878 has listed on his list of siblings!
Reasoning: He is listed as Clarence Stoneburner, a son to the head of household, Richard, according to the 1900 Henry Co. Census.
That census also says that Elizabeth has had 10 children and adding another Clarence as her son would make the total 11.
Contradictions: This Clarence Stoneburner on the 1900 Henry Co Census could just be Richard's son and no relation to Elizabeth since the birth year is off by 1 year. Also, the Obit for John1880 lists John's brother, Clarence Wiles of Toledo, as surviving. Perhaps the census taker has the last name wrong in 1900?

Maiden name of Alice was supplied by living relatives of the Jones family in New York state.

One of these is probably our Alice Jones, but proof is still needed. I am leaning toward the first one listed since it has her born PA and both her parents born PA, which is what was on all Alice's census' later on. But, I can't find a Suzanne anything that goes with Alice as of yet?

[NF05] Had a double wedding with Margaret's sister, Virginia, and Emmit Hitz.

[NF15] Married first when she was 17 per 1930 Fort Wayne IN Census which states her and Jesse were both married the first time when they were 17. This kind of jives with what Rose Slough Davis said, "My grandmother, Mary, had 3 husbands. Slough, ___?___ and Jesse Carpenter." (I think maybe this would put her first husband as ___?___, then Edwin Slough, then Carpenter since the 1900 Defiance Co OH census has her with Edward and both married 3 years.)
