Korean women take their babies almost everywhere. Only since about 2000 have
strollers started to become popular, and they are still expensive imports. The more traditional mothers still carry their young ones on their backs. These "backpacks," called chone, developed from the shawls that women once wore during the cold Korean winters. Chone are more suited than strollers to a crowded nation, and don't get stuck in ruts and holes -- a problem we witnessed several times at 2001 Tano.
