All South Korean men are required to serve in the military. This is in large part because
of concern over the possibility of invasion by North Korea. The Korean War has never
actually ended, and the South Korean forces remain on continuous alert. In truth, North Korea is today in such dire straits that the real chances of invasion are probably quite slim. In such a situation, one way in which the conscripts can be employed is in domestic public service. Here, assistant policemen recruited from the military help clear icy sidewalks in Kangnung.
