Asians regard cranes as birds of happiness, good fortune, prosperity and especially
longevity. They are also associated with wisdom; and, because they mate for life,
with fidelity. No wonder they are so often depicted in Korean art. Even the Korean
tea ceremony
uses the colors of purple, white, and blue to symbolize cranes. Margaret tried for months to take a photo of the cranes on Kyongpo Lake, but they were always too shy. Finally, thanks to some patience and a longer camera lens, she was able to capture this image in January of 2001, near the end of her stay in Kangnung.
