The East Sea (Sea of Japan), viewed from the highway.

Kangnung, an ancient fishing village, is near the Eastern coast of Korea. The ocean is literally part of life there. As in all of Korea, seafood figures prominently in the diet, even in snacks such as dried squid. The beaches are popular summer destinations, and are just a short bus ride from downtown.

In the rest of the world, the East Sea is known as the Sea of Japan. But given Japan's history of invading and dominating Korea (including the now-infamous "comfort women" of the Second World War), it's not surprising that the name "Sea of Japan" generates resistance in Korea.
