Rice harvest in progress.

Koreans traditionally eat new rice on Chusok, the holiday usually said to be Korea's equivalent of Thanksgiving. But in 2000, the rice harvest was running late because of dry conditions. To accomodate Chusok requirements, some of the rice was harvested early.

Perhaps the farmer took just enough rice from this field for his family's celebrations. Or perhaps he just hadn't yet finished the harvest when Margaret shot this photo.

This field is across the road from the KEPCO (Korean Electric Power Company) office where Margaret tutored. On all sides of Kangnung, there are no suburbs; often crops are growing within sight of city buildings.
