The figures above are inside the gate at Wolcheongsa Temple in Odaesan Park. Buddhist tradition has it that these kings will not allow visitors to pass through the gate unless their hearts are properly prepared to enter the peaceful world of the temple.

These four kings are said to be the models for those on a deck of western playing cards. At left in the photo is a little monster peering out from under one king's knee. Here the kings and their hangers-on wear a thick coat of dust.
