Most students and teachers at Best Language Institute (and at most other English hagwan
in Korea) take English nicknames. The institute's director's son, Jang Won June, goes by
the English name of John. When Margaret first met John, she was told that he was 11. She thought he merely was small for his age. In truth, John was 9 by our counting, but Koreans would say that he's 11 years old. As soon as a child is born, he's considered to be one year old; then, at the first lunar year, he's said to be two. You'll find a bit more on Korean birthdays here.
