Because Cheju Island is made of porous basalt, rainwater immediately soaks in. In
ancient times, the only sources of potable water were springs near the ocean. The
water carrier was surely a common sight. Today there are dozens of these water carrier statues, or mulhobok, to be found on Cheju. The one on the left is located in Hallim Park, and the other near Chonji Waterfall.
